A picture is worth a thousand words...

Offering of Eternal Life (Ankh Symbol)

The image depicts a mural from the tomb of Pharaoh Thutmose IV (KV43), located in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, dating from the 18th Dynasty (New Kingdom, c. 1401–1391 BC).

The scene depicts the goddess Hathor (recognizable by her sun disk framed by cow horns and the ear on her forehead) offering the ankh (the Egyptian symbol of life) to King Thutmose IV.

This mural represents a sacred ritual of investiture and divine protection, through which the legitimacy and eternal life of the pharaoh are guaranteed by the divinity.

●●●Details

••• Offering of Eternal Life (Ankh Symbol)

The goddess Hathor (right) holds the Ankh symbol (cross with a handle), the universal representation of life in Ancient Egypt.

She brings this symbol close to the nose and mouth of Pharaoh Thutmose IV (left).

In Egyptian belief, this gesture means that the goddess offers the king the divine "breath of life", ensuring his immortality in the afterlife.

••• Character Identity

●Pharaoh Thutmose IV:

Is represented with dark red skin (traditional for men in Egyptian art). He wears the Nemes crown (the blue and gold striped headscarf, specific to royalty) decorated with a uraeus (the protective cobra snake) and a wide embroidered collar.

●The Goddess Hathor:

She is recognized by her tripartite headdress and the sun disk framed by cow horns on her head. Her tight dress has a complex geometric pattern in the form of nets or diamonds, typical of divine ceremonial garments. She places her left hand on the king's shoulder, a gesture of affection, protection, and acceptance among the gods.

● Background Hieroglyphs

•••The column of text in front of the goddess contains her name and titles, mentioning her as "Hathor, Mistress of Thebes".

•••The cartouche in front of the king (oval shape) encloses his official throne name, magically protecting him.

●●●Significance

In Egyptian funerary art, such scenes served to reconfirm that the pharaoh was not just an earthly ruler, but a son of the gods.

The painting functioned as a permanent visual "spell" on the tomb walls, intended to pave the way for the king to transform into a divine being after death.
