Vittore Carpaccio, sometimes also called Vittorio (1465 - 1525/1526), ​​was an Italian painter, citizen of the Republic of Venice. Arrival of the Ambassadors, detail, preseverd in Accademy Gallery Venice.The Stories of Saint Orsola, by Vittore Carpaccio take place in nine large painted canvases, between 1490 and '95, for the homonymous School of Venice. Taken from the Golden Legend by Jacopo of Varagine, the Stories tell of the young beautiful Orsola, daughter of a Breton king, who agreed to marry Ereo, the son of a pagan king, with the promise that he would convert to the Christian faith and during a pilgrimage to Rome, on a visit to Pope Ciriaco, would have been baptized. Orsola left with eleven thousand virgins to reach her husband, but on the way back she was martyred with her entourage by Attila, king of the Huns, to whom the young woman had refused. The scene is divided into three parts, following the perspective scan given by the painted architectures. In the center, the English ambassadors hand over to the King of Brittany the offer of marriage between Ursula, his daughter, and Ereo. On her right, Orsola dictates to her father the conditions necessary for marriage, enumerating them with her fingers, starting with Ereo's conversion to the Christian religion. On the left, some elegant members of the Calza Company, probable brothers of the School of St.Orsola, populate the lodge open to the lagoon landscape. The opening of the canvas at the bottom center followed that of a door, opened after the execution of the painting.
